Mayor Lutfur Rahman is inviting local football teams to enter the Mayors Cup, a three-day feast of football to be held next month.
Aimed at showcasing the borough’s footballing talent, the event will incorporate an under-14, an under-16 and a senior tournament from Saturday to Monday, May 7-9, with the finals taking place at Mile End Stadium.
Derek Bennett, the borough’s senior football development officer, said he hoped local businesses would get involved and sponsor the event which he said promised to be a fantastic three days of action.
The competition will feature 16 teams in the junior competitions while 16 teams will hopefully contest the adult competition.
“This is an opportunity for the council along with local sports organisations to raise the profile of football within our community,” Mayor Rahman said.
It is also hoped that a charity match will be played on May 8 with local councillors and businesses taking part and all proceeds going to a local causes of the mayor’s choice.
The tournament is being jointly organised by Tower Hamlets Council Sports & Physical Activity Team in partnership with a variety of community organisations and football clubs including BFA, Newark, Stepney, Osmani Trust, Bethnal Green United and Vallance.
