Youth Club & Holiday, a project of Osmani Trust has successfully held the annual Community Fun Day in the Chicksand Estate, Spitalfields and Banglatown on Saturday 23rd October 2010. Local residents from across Tower Hamlets from all walks of life enjoyed the day that sought to foster community harmony and provide opportunities for recreational fulfilment.
The Fun Day comprised of complimentary food and games for over 150 attendees- despite the cold weather, the event was met with a positive reception from the local community whose mood was not dampened. Emphasis by the organisers was placed on intergenerational work as old and young were brought together to provide respect and tolerance for a community comprising of all ages. The Community Fun Day was a family friendly event as parents brought along their children to participate and celebrate together with the wider community.
The Youth Club & Holiday project provided refreshment and lunch in the form of a public BBQ providing nutritious food and snacks to all in attendance. To cater for the particularly young infants and children several activities were made available including face painting, henna art, raffles, balloons and bouncy castles for them to enjoy.
Nasima Begum, local resident and mother of two expressed her thoughts of such activities by stating, “These type of community events are wonderful, we rarely have community organisations that go out into the local estates to approach residents let alone host enjoyable family events. These Fun Days give my children something to look forward to and me the peace of mind knowing that they will have fun in a safe setting.”
Alongside the Osmani Trust Community Fun Day the Youth Club & Holiday project and FC Brick Lane football team also organised the complimentary Brick Lane Annual Tournament, an open age football competition held in the Chicksand Pitch for local youth to improve their health and physical well being. Several teams played together and competed with one another in a fair and friendly manner which culminating in eventual victory for Muhammadan FC.
